Vernon Township Board of Education Meeting 12/8/12

Quick Notes on BOE work session 12/8/12

The first discussion centered around allowing home schooled children to participate in after school activities ( sports etc.). There was some discussion of the consequences of this and concern over current school students who may be bumped from teams.

There will be a meeting of the Mayor and the school board at their next meeting. Apparently the states Best Practices Plan has a requirement for this and it has to happen in 2011, hence the rush. They may discuss shared use of the Weather service bulletins ( $6,000 cost ).

The board was requested to allow overnight trips for students.  Apparently there is a Science student trip to Costa Rico that the Board was unaware of and the trip will last 5 days. Comments were made that this trip is worthy but there are concerns over school liability on overnight trips. These trips have been going on for years and why this is a crisis now is unknown. When my kid went to France on a French class trip there were some memorable tales that would turn the board’s hair grey.

Discussed various fees charged to students including parking fee and activity fee. Appears the parking fee has not been uniformly implemented and the activity fee may be costing the school monies due to loaning passes to friends etc.

Discussed stipends for teachers involved in after school activities and how they are starting to increase.

It was proposed that a new requirement for HS graduation be 50 hours of community service with perhaps an opt out clause. Yes that would be one more thing that parents could drive their kids to. There may also be a new course next year called Forensic Technician which is probably due to all the CSI shows not job opportunities.

New generator will cost $110,000 more than the original $250,000 budgeted due to air pollution requirements. The generator will be used by Sussex Rural as a load generator for which the BOE will receive $53,000 in reduced electric bills. Permit fees, maintenance and fuel will be provided by Sussex Rural. NORESCO project bids will occur on Tuesday.

There was discussion on the new bill in the legislature that would put the BOE elections in November. It was mentioned that the counties political leaders were against this and it would take away the ability to vote on budgets that stay within caps.

Currently there are 388 employees in the school system which is up from the previous 378. Six new kindergarten teachers and 4 new special education teachers account for this. All day kindergarten and bringing back special education students to Vernon was stated reason for the teacher increases.
